Doug brings twenty-seven years of paper experience to Paper Forensics, with twelve of those as a Forensic Document Examiner. He has held a variety of technical and production positions within the paper industry. He has extensive experience in papermaking, product development and printing, bring a unique scientific perspective to document examination.


Doug has introduced two exclusive technologies for advancements in forensic document examination and legal document security, ScanRiteSM and SecureDoc5SM.


Doug's vast experience in wet end and surface & colloid chemistry is instrumental in the evaluation of the relationship of paper and ink. His paper science and testing background brings a scientific perspective to paper and handwriting analysis and document security.




Paper Forensics – Founder & CEO

Founded Paper Forensics in 2016, after being a partner at Paper Private Eye since 2007. He has brought his experience and knowledge about paper and printing to the Document Examiner Community by presenting at five National and International Conferences in 2018. Conferences included NADE, National Association of Document Examiners, twice at SAFE, Scientific Association of Forensic Examiners, IADE, International Association of Document Examiners and AFDE, Association of Forensic Document Examiners.


Doug continues to share his knowledge and education through his Website Blog at and forensic document examiner organizational trade journals. He consults with many other Forensic Document Examiners, Handwriting Experts and Certified Fraud Examiners, sharing his industrial expertise in the area of paper testing and printing. Doug has both national and international clientele and is an industry expert in paper forensics.


Callahan Industries
Responsible for account management and instrumentation sales for the Southeast Atlantic Coastal Territory, covering approximately forty-five paper mills.



Ashland Hercules Water Technologies, various locations

Held various technical and sales positions within Ashland Hercules Water Technologies (formerly Hercules Inc.), providing the paper industry with the latest technologies in paper chemistry. Primary emphasis being surface and wet end chemistry including internal sizing, surface sizing, and 100% surface sizing technologies. He also has vast experience in retention and various filler chemistries. Has worked in over fifty paper mills, on almost every type of paper machine, including, printing and writing, coated and uncoated free-sheet, packaging, bleached board, and tissue paper grades.

Boise Cascade Corporation, International Falls, MN and Vancouver, WA

Held positions of process and production engineering positions at the International Falls Mill for four paper machines representing nearly 3000 tons per day of paper production.

·       Assisted with Xerox and Hewlett Packard development, production and qualification of printing and writing grades.

·       Responsible for special packaging and barrier coatings, including oil and grease resistant and food grade papers for the International Falls and Vancouver Paper Mills.

·       Developed food packaging products for McDonalds and others.

·       Developed security paper for Deluxe Check.
